Spoon-River and Panther-Lane Dairy Goats
We have bred and raised LaMancha, Oberhasli and Recorded Grades since 1994 when our son, Nathan, watched a dairy goat show at the Henry County Fair near home. His first doeling and buckling were purchased from Crazy Hollow by selecting breedings from their sales list and he chose the herd name of Panther-Lane. Shortly after, a friend gave us some goats they could no longer keep. Then Nathan fell in love with an Alpine type doe at a sale barn that we recorded as Alpine Native on Appearance. She turned out to win his heart as well as Grand Champion 18 times, Reserve Grand 5 times, Best of Breed 7 times and Best in Show 8 times in 3 short years. Nathan retired her at the end of the show season in 1999 after he graduated from high school.
After purchasing Oberhasli goats, we chose Spoon-River for a herd name and continued the Panther Lane herd as well. Because Charlie worked, I showed the goats. He helped on weekends to pack, move, set up and tear down for the shows. He was finally able to retire in 2009 and show his goats. We’ve done very well in the show ring over the past 16 years, but it was especially fun to go to NAILE for the first time in 2010 and receive Grand Champion with Spoon-River Vanna and Reserve Grand Champion with Spoon-River Vanessa (Vanna’s dam), the only two Oberhasli does we took.
Our kids are raised on a strict CAE prevention program of heat treated colostrum and pasteurized milk. CD&T vaccinations are given at approximately one month of age and repeated in four weeks. We worm on an as needed basis using the Famacha method to prevent wormer resistance. For best physical condition, the herd is fed free choice alfalfa/grass hay mix and measured portions of 12-16% grain depending on time of year, weather conditions, pregnancy and stage of growth and/or development.
Over the years, we have provided goats for show, breeding, 4-H projects, pets, and home milk. We have enjoyed helping others with tattooing, disbudding, hoof trimming and answering questions from what our experiences have taught us.
